How to Host a Neighborhood Art Exhibition

By Nicole Barragato, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Ann Arbor May 12, 2020

With the stay-at-home order being extended we are still looking for ways to entertain our kids at home. The weather is starting to get nicer, which means my kids are spending more and more time outside. We really enjoy going for walks through our neighborhood and we really appreciate when our neighbors create interesting and fun things for us to spy on our walks!

We were so sad to learn this past week that the Ann Arbor Art Fair was cancelled, but we decided that we had a solution!

Macaroni Kid has a fun idea to help you create a neighborhood art exhibition while continuing to practice social distancing. Kids will have fun both creating the art and then displaying it proudly.

1. Print our FREE Art Exhibition poster

Create your artwork on this page to be displayed also with your name.

2. Research different artists and their techniques

Learn more about artists and get inspiration for your own masterpiece. We have created a Pinterest Board full of wonderful art ideas for kids inspired by famous artists. Or create an original all of your own!

Make as many pieces of art as your heart desires. Multiple pieces will make your exhibit unique and more interesting for neighbors to look at.

3. Share this article with people you know

The more people who participate, the more fun this Art Exhibition will be! Share this story with friends on Facebook, with neighborhood groups, and anyone else you know who might want to take part!

4. Open up your Gallery

Choose a nice weather day to display your artwork outside. You can use sticks as poles and string yarn to display your artwork with clothespins. If you made multiple pieces of art you can have neighbors vote for their favorite using paper cups and acorns. People will also enjoy hearing from the talented artist. Who was your inspiration? What technique did you use? Make sure you are prepared to answer their questions.

Don't just take our word for it. Check out this awesome Art Exhibition created by Felicity! Her neighbors really enjoyed hearing more about her artwork on their walk. That night Felicity told her Mom that "This was the best night ever!"

This stay-at-home order is lasting longer than we had thought, but a neighborhood art exhibition is just the thing to unite people together and spark joy in children.
