Playground of the Week: Gallup Park

By Nicole Barragato, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Ann Arbor June 30, 2020

Gallup Park is bursting with activity! It is located along the Huron River and Geddes Pond and is full of scenic walkways and bridges to explore! This park offers 69 acres so it will take several trips to see it all. From trails, to nature areas, to playgrounds this park has it all!

PARKING

  • Parking is available off Fuller Road at the main entrance (best place to park for nature area).
  • Two parking lots are available within the park along park drive (keep going to get to the lot by the playground).
  • Lot is also available further southeast on Geddes Road (park here for boat launch).

SPECIAL FEATURES & PLAYGROUND NOTES

  • 2 separate playgrounds to accommodate a wide range of playing skills.
  • Little kid playground is small traditional structure with a tire swing.

  • Big kid area has a landscape structure and has a sign that it is recommended for ages 5-12 due to the strength and coordination needed (my girls are 3 and 4 at the time and they both loved it, but choose which playground is best for your kid).
  • The are several unique areas to play on, but you will not find traditional swings or baby swings.

  • There is a large sand pit to play in which has easy access to the pond so kids were bringing water from the pond to the sand (note that the pond is not fenced off).

  • Little kid playground is covered in mulch.
  • Big kid playground is covered in a poured rubber mat throughout.
  • The park is very dog friendly.
  • Gallup Park connects to the Furstenberg Nature Area.
  • Reserve a canoe or kayak rental by visiting here.

SEATING

  • Various picnic tables and benches throughout, including great shaded areas.
  • 2 covered shelter areas with picnic tables and grill.

BATHROOMS & OTHER AMENITIES

  • Bathroom is a bit of a hike from the playground. It is a building, but is similar to a Porta John without running water (bring hand sanitizer).
  • Drinking fountains are located throughout the park.

TRAILS

  • Gallup Park is park of the Border-to-Border Trail (B2B) which is a non-motorized pathway that connects cities, parks, and numerous destinations throughout Washtenaw County. To learn more about B2B visit here!
