The Best Homemade Brownies Recipe with a Spooky Twist

By Nicole Barragato, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Ann Arbor October 13, 2020

One of my favorite desserts to indulge in is brownies because I am absolutely addicted to anything chocolate. I grew up on brownies from a box and thoroughly enjoyed them, that was until my mother-in-love introduced me to how easy it is to make them from scratch. Once you see how delicious and easy these brownies are I bet you too will be falling in love with this homemade recipe.

We have added additional steps to create the spiderweb design on the top feel free to keep this step or omit it (if it is not Halloween time). I will give you further instructions on that below.

  • 1 Cup Butter
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 1 Cup Cocoa Powder
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 Cup Chocolate Chips (only needed if not making the chocolate ganache)

Chocolate Ganache Spiderweb

  • 1 Cup Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 Cup Powdered Sugar

Directions:

Brownies

  1. Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir in sugar and cocoa.
  3. Remove from the heat and let cool for a bit (eggs will start to cook if mixture is too hot).
  4. Whisk in eggs one at a time until glossy.
  5. Stir in vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 inch pan. (Sprinkle top with chocolate chips if not making the chocolate ganache).
  7. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.

Chocolate Ganache Spiderweb

  1. Combine chocolate chips and 1/4 cup heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Cook on high for 45 second, stir, and repeat at 15 seconds increments until smooth.
  3. Pour over cooled brownies and smooth with a spatula.
  4. Whisk 1 cup of powdered sugar with 1/4 cup heavy cream in a small bowl.
  5. Transfer to a plastic ziploc bag and twist the bag until frosting is snugly packed in a corner.
  6. Snip a very small hole in the corner of the bag.
  7. Make a spiral pattern by starting at the center of the brownie and working towards the edge.
  8. Create a spiderweb design by dragging a toothpick from the center out to the edges several times.

No matter the time of the year I hope that your family enjoys these brownies as much as mine does.
