The Weekly - August 25, 2020

By Nicole Barragato, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Ann Arbor August 25, 2020

🌈 WEEKLY UPDATE β˜€οΈ

This week I have been in full homeschool planning and prepping mode. My children are preschool aged so I know that I do not need to plan as much as some parents who are in the upper grade levels and some would argue at this age they really don't need anything formal yet. My oldest however is almost 5 and has a rare form of epilepsy which causes seizure activity the majority of the time while she is sleeping. This has made learning higher order skills pretty challenging. So although I agree she is young, I already see her falling behind in some areas and I am hoping to get her closer to her peers.

It was a tough day when my husband and I came to the reality that she most likely will not grow up to be a doctor or an engineer. Not that she would have anyways because it really is not her personality. She is very free-spirited! Yet as parents don't we make all of these plans for our children, grandiose ideas even when we are still rocking them in their nurseries. Dreams for their future, plans that we hope for their lives. Then when those unfulfilled dreams get crushed it physically pains us even though it never really had even come to fruition yet.

To me that has been the greatest lesson of 2020. This idea that my plans, my dreams, my schedule is really just that... it is mine. Before I would have clutched onto those things so tightly with closed fists trying to maintain some balance, some sense that I ultimately am in control. But all of us have given up many dreams, plans, schedules this year and we continue to do so on a daily basis. So I am trying to now walk through life with open hands ready to receive not what my plans, dreams, and agenda is, but what is able to come my way when I willingly submit to the unknown.

Hugs,

Nicole
